Although wood has been mainstay in construction, the benefits of using steel are beginning to outweigh its counterpart. Steel stud framing offers greater flexibility, strength and durability, and can provide a better uniform-quality especially over long spans. While wood framing is flammable, steel is fire resistant and will not shrink, warp, split, or mold. Metal studs are stronger and lighter in weight, making them easier to transport and store. Steel studs are consistent which reduces waste from warped, twisted, or split studs.

Steel is slightly more expensive than wood and steel framed houses suffer from relatively poor insulation and low energy efficiency. It’s very common to see hybrid steel/wood frames, which take advantage of both steel and wood’s strength benefits.
